[gita-talk] Clarification on Daily Bhagavad Gita Message - Gita 18-59

Few clarifications. One needs to understand teachings based context, audience and one's own spiritual vision and perspective.

>> The only thing for a devotee to do is to give up the affinity with the world and turn towards God.

Swamiji has always said that no living entity (self, soul) has any affinity towards world. We always have affinity towards God. Seeming affinity toward world is assumed or illusory. Can you give up something which you don't have? Giving up affinity with the world actually means to understand that we never had any affinity with the world.

>> After devotee turns towards God, if there remains a shortcoming in him,  that will be removed by His grace.

Self is always pure, eternal, always part of God etc. There is no shortcoming in self. Any shortcoming which we observe is assumed or illusory. Removal of shortcoming really means to understand that self is always pure and can never be polluted by inert matter.

>> It means the devotee has no longer any responsibility to remove the shortcoming, but God takes full responsibility to remove that shortcoming.

Self can't remove any shortcoming as it doesn't have any shortcoming. Assumed or illusory shortcoming goes away when God removes illusion.

>> The Lord, by showering His special grace on the devotee, removes all obstacles and hurdles, and even makes it possible to His attainment.

God is always attained. Due to illusion, it appears that God is not attained.

Please always keep Swamiji's essence in perspective when you meditate on his teachings.

Daily Bhagavad Gita Message

Gita 18-59

                            yadahakāramāśritya na yotsya iti manyase
mithyaiṣa vyavasāyaste prakṛtistvāṁ niyokṣyati
Prompted by egoism, you think ''I will not fight,'' this resolve of yours is in vain. Your Kṣatriya nature will drive you to fight.

Comment:

The Lord told Arjuna that by His grace, he would attain Him and also overcome all his obstacles (18/56, 58). But in spite of the Lord's such utterances, Arjuna did not respond, then the Lord declares, "If out of ignorance you do not listen to Me, it is not an issue but if out of egoism, you do not listen to Me, you will come to be ruin." The Lord means to say that as He takes full responsibility of a devotee for his means and end, so the devotee should also take refuge in Him in every way. But if he does not take refuge in Me but takes refuge in egoism, he will fall. On one side the Lord inspires him to perform his duty to fight; and on the other hand his Kṣatriya nature will compel him to fight. Now, if he does not obey the Lord, his Ksatra-nature will force him to fight, he cannot stay away from fighting anyway, but then he himself will have to shoulder the responsibility and not the Lord.

Gita 18-58

maccittaḥ sarvadurgāṇi matprasādāttariṣyasi
atha cettvamahakārānna śroṣyasi vinakṣyasi

Fixing your mind on Me, by My grace you shall overcome all obstacles; but if out of pride you will not listen to Me, you shall perish.
Comment:

The only thing for a devotee to do is to give up the affinity with the world and turn towards God. After devotee turns towards God, if there remains a shortcoming in him,  that will be removed by His grace. It means the devotee has no longer any responsibility to remove the shortcoming, but God takes full responsibility to remove that shortcoming. The Lord, by showering His special grace on the devotee, removes all obstacles and hurdles, and even makes it possible to His attainment.
