[gita-talk] Daily Bhagavad Gita Message (Gita 18-57)

Daily Bhagavad Gita Message
Gita 18-57

cetasā sarvakarmāṇi mayi sannyasya matparaḥ

buddhiyogamupāśritya maccittaḥ satataṁ bhava

Mentally dedicating all actions to Me, having Me as the ultimate goal, resorting to Yoga of equanimity, fix your mind constantly on Me.

Comment:

In the preceding verse the Lord having declared the attainment of the eternal imperishable state, now tells the method of how to attain that state. For an aspirant there are two important duties-- to renounce the relationship with the world and to accept the relationship with God. In the term 'madvyapāśrayaḥ' used in the preceding verse, there is predominance of accepting the relationship with God; while in this verse in the term 'buddhiyogamupāśritya' there is predominance of renunciation of affinity with the world. By contemplation solely on God, the relationship with world is abandoned and automatically one attains equanimity. Contemplation on God is possible only when one accepts 'I am God's only'-- the feeling of mineness with God will come. With the coming of sense of mineness with God, the mind automatically will be engaged in God.

All livings beings always have the relationship with God. The existence of this relationship is forgotten due to assumed relationship with the world. To remove the forgetfulness of relationship with Him, the Lord says-- always fix your mind on Me.

Gita 18-56

sarvakarmāṇyapi sadā kurvāṇo madvyapāśrayaḥ
matprasādādavāpnoti śāśvataṁ padamavyayam

Continually performing all actions, taking refuge in Me,  by My grace,  My devotee attains the Eternal imperishable State.

Comment:

About a Jñānayogī the Lord declared, that having renounced all sense-objects, controlling his senses, ever being engaged in meditation and having abandoned egoism, sense of mineness, desire, anger etc., becomes qualified to attain Brahma (18/51—53). But here the Lord declares for a devotee, even while performing all prescribed actions, by His grace attains the Eternal Imperishable state; because he has taken refuge in Me. It means that a devotee himself does not have work for his own welfare. The reason is that the devotee does not depend even the least bit on his power, intelligence and ability etc. he takes sole refuge in God only. Then grace of God alone lifts him up for his ultimate good.
