Daily Bhagavad Gita Message

Gita 18-45

sve sve karmaṇyabhirataḥ saṁsiddhiṁ labhate naraḥ
svakarmanirataḥ siddhiṁ yathā vindati tacchṛṇu

Devoted to his own inherent duty, man attains the highest perfection (God realization). Engaged in his own duty lovingly, how he attains perfection, listen to that now.

Comment:

Besides the inherent duty according to one's Varṇa (social order), whatever other duties have been accepted by a man, all of them should also be included within 'sve sve karmaṇi'. As a man adopts the profession of a lawyer, teacher, physician or a servant etc., the discharge of that duty in a lovingly, respectfully and in a selfless manner is also 'svakarma' (own duty) for him.

When a man performs an action with the sense of selfishness, partiality and desire etc., then it becomes 'Aasakti' (attachment). But if he performs an action in a loving manner, without the desire for fruit and for the welfare of others, it is called 'abhirati'. The Lord has negated 'attachment' in actions-- 'na karmasvanuṣajjate' (Gītā 6/4). If a man should neither have superiority complex nor the inferiority complex, but he should simply perform his duty properly, just like if he were a part of a watch, and should not speak ill of others in their absence and not humiliate others, and should not feel proud of himself, then it is considered 'abhirati'.

In fact, importance is not of action (duty) but it is the 'attitude' (bhaav) which is of prime importance. If the doer of an action has the pure sentiment, it will be beneficial, he may belong to any 'Varṇa'. In 'action' predominance is of 'Varṇa' while in 'sentiment or feeling' there is predominance of the divine nature or the demoniac nature. Therefore, the divine or demoniac nature is not due to any particular 'Varna' but it can be in anyone. Divine nature leads to salvation and the demoniac nature leads to bondage. Therefore even if a Brāhmaṇa becomes proud due to his 'Varna', then he will be endowed with the demoniac nature i.e., he will have a downfall.
