Daily Bhagavad Gita Message

Gita 18-41

śamo damastapaḥ śaucaṁ kṣāntirārjavameva ca
jñānaṁ vijñānamāstikyaṁ brahmakarma svabhāvajam

Restraining the mind; controlling senses; enduring hardships for the sake of sacred duty; maintaining internal and external purity; forgiving the fault of others; keeping straightforwardness of mind and senses; have knowledge of scriptures, experiencing proper performance of Yajna (sacrifice); having faith in Vedas and God-- these are  the duties of Brāhmin born of his own nature.

If the 'Varṇa' tradition has been properly followed, a Brāhmin naturally possesses these qualities. But if there is intermingling of castes, then the Brāhmiṇs do not naturally possess these qualities, there is a shortcoming in these qualities.

In the preceding verse, the expression 'svabhāvaprabhavairguṇaiḥ' was used, therefore here the Lord mentions 'svabhāvaja karma' (the action born of own nature). In the making of Svabhāva the prime importance is of birth and then the company a person keeps is important. Due to-- the company one keeps, the self study of scriptures and practice etc., the Svabhāva (nature) changes.
