Srimad Bhagavad Gita

Eighteenth Chapter

ayuktaḥ prākṛtaḥ stabdhaḥ śaṭho'naiṣkṛtiko'lasaḥ
viṣādī dīrghasūtrī ca kartā tāmasa ucyate

One who is undisciplined, uncultured, arrogant and stubborn, deceitful, malicious, lazy, despondent and procrastinating-- such a doer is said to be Tāmasika.

In the verses-- twenty-sixth, twenty-seventh and twenty-eighth, the Lord has enumerated the traits (Gunas) of 'Karta' (agent or doer).  As is the Karta, so are his actions. Whatever traits the 'Karta' possesses, his actions are according to those traits. The instruments (Karanas) are also according to Karta. Therefore, if the Karta is Sāttvika or Rājasika or Tāmasika then actions performed by him also become Sāttvika or Rājasika or Tāmasika respectively.
