[gita-talk] Daily Bhagavad Gita Message - Gita 18-09

||  Shree Hari  ||

Srimad Bhagavad Gita

Eighteenth Chapter

                                                                        18-9

kāryamityeva yatkarma niyataṁ kriyate'rjuna
saṅgaṁ tyaktvā phalaṁ caiva sa tyāgaḥ sāttviko mataḥ

But, he who performs a prescribed duty (obligatory action), O Arjuna, because it ought to be done, abandoning attachment and also the desire for fruit, that relinquishment, is regarded as Sattvika.

Comment:

Abandonment of actions, in Rajasic mode is due to fear of  bodily strain and in a Tamasic mode it is due to delusion (ignorance), but in Sattvica mode,  the actions are not abandoned but they are performed as obligatory duties without a selfish motive, in a timely manner. In the abandonment of actions in Rajasic and Tamasic modes, externally it seems that  there is no bondage but internally bondage remains but in  Sattvic mode even while performing actions externally, there is no bond internally.

There is a noteworthy point, when an action is performed for the sake of duty, the attachment to the actions is renounced on its own. In the worldly yogic disciplines (Karmayoga and Jñānayoga) giving up attachment with the body and the world is of prime importance, therefore the spiritual aspirant should perform every action regarding it as his duty. External abandonment of actions is conducive to bondage but the performance of actions as a matter of duty, without having attachment with them, leads to salvation.
