[gita-talk] SAT CHETAN ANAND - THE PROPERTIES OF SELF

Shree Hari

Please be BRIEF in all responses.   Thank you !

Respected Divine Sadhaks

I only know that anything that I consider mine gives me happiness and
this should be a very small portion of the word," Anand".  But Sat and
Chetan are the words only and I do not understand the grand meaning.

I request the Enlightened Sadhaks to please let me learn the meaning
ofSat, Chetan and Anand.

Regards

M M Batra

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SAT, CHID and ANADA are nature of the self:

(Atma Bodha Verse 24) Just as luminosity is the nature of the Sun, coolness of water and heat of fire, so too the nature of the Atman is Eternity (sat), Purity, Reality, Consciousness (chid) and Bliss (anand).

You should start with understanding that self (atman) is separate from matter.

(Atma Bodha Verse 18)
One should understand that the Atman is always like the King, distinct from the body, senses, mind and intellect, all of which constitute the matter (Prakriti); and is the witness of their functions.

(Atma Bodha Verse 32)
I am other than the body and so I am free from changes such as birth, wrinkling, senility, death, etc. I have nothing to do with the sense objects such as sound and taste, for I am without the sense-organs.

Understand SAT (eternity). SAT is negation of death. This world is always changing and transient. Everything has an end. SAT always exists and has no beginning and no end.

(Gita 2/20) For the soul there is neither birth nor death at any time. He has not come into being, does not come into being, and will not come into being. He is unborn, eternal, ever-existing and primeval. He is not slain when the body is slain.

Chid is negation of inertness and ignorance.

Anand is negation of unhappiness in this world. It is said to be infinite times more than happiness in this world like Ramcharit Manas states that happiness in this world is like a drop in ocean of brahma-anand. These statements describe anand as negation of experience in this world as it cannot be described in terms of matter. As it is said in by Adi Shankaracharya that the experience of happiness in this world belongs only to mind:

(Atma Bodha Verse 23)
Attachment, desire, pleasure, pain, etc., are perceived to exist so long as Buddhi or mind functions. They are not perceived in deep sleep when the mind ceases to exist. Therefore they belong to the mind alone and not to the Atman.

By meditation on above statements, I hope your question will be answered.

Hari Om

At the outset, let me state that trio referred in Q is SAT, CHIT AND ANANDA and not SAT, CHETAN AND ANANDA , stated by Questioner. Although deeply both mean the same- knowledge.

Sat, Chit and Ananda are three desires of a human. These are your 3 basic forms also. SAT - represents your desire " to live" , never to die. It is desire in relation to your already existing basic form - AVINAASHI ( immortal, imperishable ). This desire arises in you because of your connection with VINAASHI ( mortal, perishable) body. CHIT - represents your desire " to know" everything, never to remain as AGYAANI ( un- knowledgeable) . You want to know . You don't want to be some one who does not know, some one who is fool. You want to be perfect, you don't want to be imperfect. You want to be faultless, you don't want to make mistakes. CHETAN - means that which knows itself as well as others. It is desire in relation to your already existing form - Sentient, CHETAN,  and AMAL ( faultless). This desire arises in you because of your connection with INERT and ever-changing imperfect body, world. Inert ( JAD) means - that which neither knows itself, nor knows others. ANANDA- represents your desire to be ever happy. You want to remain happy always, you don't want sorrows. It is desire in relation to your already existing basic form - SAHAJ SUKHRAASI ( ever-blissful). This desire arises in you because of your connection with ever sorrowful, ever-changing DUKHALAYAM - world and your body.

श्री बत्राजी!
यदि यह बता दें कि कथन I only know that anything that I consider mine gives me happiness and
this should be a very small portion of the word," Anand". में ''I'' (मैं), mine (मेरा या मेरी) और me (मुझे) किसे लक्ष्य करते हैं तो उत्तर देना सरल होगा। कृपया बताइयेगा।
सविनय,
