[gita-talk] Vasudhevakutumbakam - Please Enlighten !

How do we understand the concept of Vasudhevakutumbakam? Is the term a derivative of Vasudeva or vice versa? Some have told me that it has nothing to do with Vasudeva, but separately derived from the humanitarian principle of the earth (Vasudha)inhabitants.Kindly enlighten me.

Dear Sadhakas,
Hare Krishna.
This is in response to a question from a Sadhaka.

Vasudhaika kutumbam means whole world is one family.

Lord Krishna says in BhagavadGita,

"Sarva bhutastham atmanam
 Sarva bhutani ca Atmani
 Iksate yogayuktatma
 Sarvatra samadarshanah. "
       (Gitaji, 6, 29)

Which means,

'A true yogi sees Me in every being and every being in Me. He sees Me everywhere. '

Vasudha means earth. Kutumbam means family.

Once we see The Lord everywhere, then the whole world becomes one family.

Thank you.

Correct. Vasudha. Means  world. Vasu means life  dha means upholding

Jai Guru Dev!

Dear Sadaks,
The answer in our scripts. All living things abide in Vasudeava during Maha Pralaya and manifest from Vasudeva. So we belong to his family in other words.
B.S

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"अयं बन्धुरयं नेति गणना लघुचेतसाम् | उदारचरितानां तु वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम् || "

ayaṁ bandhurayaṁ nēti gaṇanā laghucētasām | udāracaritānām tu vasudhaiva kuṭumbakam ||

"This one is a relative; this other one is a stranger" is for the mean-minded. For those who're known as magnanimous, the entire world constitutes but a family.

It means to see people in this world as one family because God is in everyone and everyone is part of God.

Murari Das

Hari Om

Q is - How to understand the concept of Vasudevkutumbakam ? The literal meaning of the term is: Family of Vasudev !

Says Gita - 1... Mamaiyya Ansho Jeeva Loke ( 15:7- All Jeevas are My and My only ( Vasudev's) fragment ) 2....Vasudev Sarvam ( 7:19- All is God - Vasudev) 3...Mattah Parataram Naanyat Kinchidasti Dhananjay ( 7: 7- There is nothing other than Me, O Arjuna) 4- Mayi Sarvam Idam Proktam Sutre Mani Gana Eva ( 7:7- as yarn beads are strung on the thread, so all the world's are permeated by Me )....and so on ! Gita is full of such verses....chapter 9 specifically lays foundation for the concept of Vasudevkutumbakam only.

What do the above prove ? It proves the term Vasudevkutumbakam has everything to do with Vasudev of Holy Gita. Hence the term can very easily and doubtlessly get understood directly with reference to Holy Gita. The term means - This entire universe , all Jeevas, all bodies, everything visible or invisible, sentient or inert...is Vasudev and Vasudev only..and hence Family of Vasudev only !!!

How to implement the above knowledge ? Actually, this concept is backbone of entire Gita and all yogas of Gita. Whatever striving method we adopt, for fulfillment of the very object of human life, fulfillment of the only task which we humans are supposed to do, we must build on this concept of Vasudevkutumbakam. Whether we take Karma Yoga or Jnana Yoga or Bhakti Yoga, we must  be SARVA BHOOT HITE RATAA ( continuously indulging in welfare of all Jeevas/ bodies). Be those BHOOTS be humans, or animals or trees or any other body, creature, nature...we must be conscious ( have sentiment of ) of their welfare. Irrespective of Yoga ( striving method), this indulgence is COMPULSORY for all types of Sadhaks !!!! You can not accomplish ANY YOGA, without implementing this concept of Vasudevkutumbakam, in the meaning of SARVA BHOOT HITE RATAA !!!!

Jai Shree Krishna

      Dear Dr S S ,
Yes you are correct, वसुधैव कुटुम्बकं has nothing to do with वासुदेव. It is simply the collection of words वसुधा + इव + कुटुम्बकं .Meaning -Whole world as one single family. The concept is to treat all people in the world as your brothers and sisters etc. Do not consider anyone as outsider. Treat all as your relatives only i.e. with love and respect.
      With regards,
      ------Mukund Apte

वासुदेव: relates to परमात्मा and वसुधैव relates to वसुधा (earth or the world)
सविनय,

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The complete shloka is like this -

अयं निजः परा वेत्ति, गणना लघु चेत साम
उदार चरितानाम तू वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम

It means that 'this is mine or that is yours' is the dictum of low mind people. For large hearted persons the whole earth is like one family...........
