COW PROTECTION CAN ONLY BE SECURED BY CULTIVATING UNIVERSAL FRIENDLINESS I.E. AHIMSA

M. K. Gandhi

-----------------------------------------

Humble Question is : How can that universal friendliness i.e. ahimsaa (which Gandhijee pointed to) be cultivated in masses (people of India)? Are there any practical ways to do so? Why could those ways (if they exist) are not being implemented in masses (people of India) uptil now?
Humbly,
Saadhaka.

-----------------------------------------

Have you come across a non-vegetarian who is willing to slit the throat of even one animal of the many he or she regularly eats? These are the very people who relish the flesh of different creatures… killed by butchers. Simply because of their desire to eat them, they conveniently ignore the fact that they themselves are responsible for the slaughter of innumerable innocent animals.

Meat, leather, skin, hair, bones, organs, blood and all other animal body parts are in demand as products and by-products – a huge demand which is readily met by abattoirs and processing units. And it has given rise to different businesses and investors who think of animals as commodities for commercial exploitation and of the resultant monetary gain.

Who is responsible for hinsa upon animals?

· The person who manufactures or invests in a company which produces the instrument which kills. (Knife, gun, fishing equipment, poison, etc.)

· The person, who sells the instrument which kills or promotes its sale. (Includes animal welfare organizations which encourage the use of so-called `stunners' in slaughter houses.)

· The person who buys or pays for the instrument which kills; as also the person who takes a commission on such a transaction.

· The person, who breeds, sells, buys, traps, etc any creature for slaughter.

· The person, who actually performs the act of killing. (Slaughtering, hunting, shooting, fishing, etc.)

· The person, who watches the killing or indirectly supports the person who does it by way of monetary investment or otherwise. (Includes animal welfare organizations which practice `mercy' killing.)

· The person, who sells the carcass including the person who benefits from profits from such a sale.

· The person, who cooks or `processes' the carcass.

· The person, who buys the carcass.

· The person who eats or utilizes the carcass or even its by-products. (Flesh, bones, leather, etc.)

· The person, who watches the carcass being eaten, supports the person who eats it, or indirectly utilizes it as in consumer items containing animal ingredients. (Includes monetary support given by parents to children whose vegetarian ethics are contrary to theirs.)

· The person, who is indifferent to the killing and brushes it aside as `some thing that happens' even if he himself is not a party to any of the above.

It is therefore ethically wrong for meat eaters to absolve themselves of blame by saying animals would be killed any way even if not for them and that if they did not buy meat some one else would. Similarly, how can butchers get away by saying "if I don't kill, some one else will"? Logically it boils down to a matter of demand and supply. If there is no demand the supply would automatically diminish.

Moreover, it makes no difference whether the item is meat, leather or any other body part. Each and every part of the animal is paid for when bought alive by the butcher or sold by him after slaughter.

'Ahimsa Paramo Dharmah' - Non violence is the Supreme Righteousness. From the perspective of 'doer'(Karta) - violence is of 3 kinds: 1. Krita (doing oneself the violence) 2 Kaarit (get violence done by others) 3 Anumodit ( aid/abet/supprt violence) ! These 3 types of violences are practiced by 3 sentiments/bhavas by the Karta. 1 By Anger 2 By Greed 3 By Moha (Aham/mamta) . Thus violence becomes of 9 types. This violence then gets classified on 'velocity/volume' yardstick. Giving little pain is 'mrudu matra' (little size). Little more than that is 'madhya matra' (middle level) and to kill or inflict grave wounds is ' adhi matra' means high level. Thus violence becomes of 27 types. This violence is done through 3 mediums ..1 By Mind 2 By Speech 3 By Body ! Thus violence becomes of 81 types.

'Ahimsa' means not indulging into any of aforesaid 81 types of violence. Cow slaughtering is violence of high level done because of greed. It has all ingredients of being a 'maha paap' ! Besides it is an example of ingratitude by humans.

Actually to give pain to any creature/Jeeva is Scripture prohibited action. Would we like that any person should beat us or kill us? If we do not like that, then we should not inflict pains on any other creature or kill them. The essence of Dharma is- Do not do that thing to others, which you do not if somebody does that to you ! Do not destroy or aid or abet in destruction of any Jeeva. This sin, this is grave injustice. Just As you like your life , all others like their lives. Violence of any nature to anybody iis sin, what to talk of killing animals and eating them away.

Among all animals, Mother Cow is supreme in doing good to humanity. Therefore slaughtering of cow is a very heinous and grave sin.Just by air of cow , the human body becomes pure and pious. Those who are afflicted with serious and even uncurable diseases, if they caress body of cow, morning and evening, serve them with affection, they get cured of their diseases. Try it yourself. You will see the result. There are huge benefits by protecting cows. If you protect cows, cows will protect you. Therefore, cow slaughtering is a 'ghor maha paap' (henious and one of the greatest sins). The result of violence is very bad...very very bad. Therefore we should protect cows. If the cows are not protected, India will suffer immensely. There will be great calamities in the country. If you protect cows, your country will remain safe.

Dear Sadhaks,
In my opinion, people who are driven by the act of Animal or Human cruelty, is
due to the lack of Love. These type of humen are not God Realized people. No one will kill if they understand the true meaning of LOVE. In fact if they know how to love themselves, they will not kill or harm anything or any body.
They also lack the awarness of who they are because there consciousness is very limited. Enlightenment comes within. No matter how much we try to teach and preach, when someones consciousness is not evolving, all efforts of shifting their consciousness is useless. Souls/people are awakend in there own Divine Timing. Each soul is destined to awaken. Some will take many many Reincarnations until they become full realized individuals like Ghandi, Jesus, buddah and all those who are God/ self realized people.
In the mean time, those who are conscious, continue to live by being an example to others without any expectations of change. The only tning can be done, to be around like minded conscious people praying for those who are blind to see, or lost to be found (in cinsciousness). By doing so a shift can be created in their
consciousness towards Love and compassion. Yes, universal frendliness or universal love is an essential practice for humanity, but its a long process for an individual to achieve.
May Light & Love prevail on Earth

Respected Basudebjee!
Shoulders of the masses need physical, mental and moral strength from within (not from without from parents, teachers, politicians and others as you said) to sustain the weight of SHOULD DO on them (shoulders) and this will happen only when God Willing. Who can disregard Swameejee's upaaya (way),"Bhagwan kee marjee men apanee marajee milaa do, fir dekho."???

Himsa is a natural goons (roperty) of human beings and animals. Bt
equally love and Ahimsa is also a similar strong guna. Ahimsa can be
cultivated to overcome Himsa. This has happened in the past among
individuals like Dhruva. Even the cultivation by masses has been
possible through the effeorts of Gautama Buddha, Emperor Ashoka and the Jain saints. Ahimsa and universal friendliness has also been preached by Jesus Christ.
Ahimsa has to be cultivated forst at homes to children by their paents.
So both parents and children have to by taught by the various religious missionaries. Everyone has to be demonstarted the mental satisfaction one derives by loving every thing and every one else and remove all jealousies and hate from the mind irrespective of differences in material conditions and backgrounds. The schools should seriously teach moral science. The politicians should practice this. The rich should practice this. The teachers should practice this. Then others will follow.

Wonderful observation indeed. History answers this best!

Why preached Ahimsa does not stay with mass?! It puzzles me to my core.

Buddha was the first to take compassion in the mass and preached people Ahimsa in mass scale. He became an instant star by the crowd starving for peace. His values influenced even merciless killers such as Angulimaala and ruthless monarchs such as Ashoka. His teachings and followers filled almost the whole Asian continent within few centuries. His name and teachings are revered by millions even today. BUT ... the wars raged during his time and continued after his times in the world his influence claims presence.

Jesus was another phenomenal teacher in human history. He is best known for living the great teachings in spite of all adversities. He pleaded to God for forgiving those who cruscified him to death! The very embodiment of Ahimsa was cruelly terminated by the Romans. His ardent followers have paraded to his birthplace in countless crusades massacring many humans who may not agree with them! The grudge developed by his followers on another fellow sect of human beings lead to an industry dedicated to killing fellow human beings in mass scale! They even conducted seminars and conferences on how to terminate the so-called non-believers in mass scale!!

Gandhi is one great example in recent history. The man is known for his transparency and galvanized mass toward his faith in Ahimsa. The man lived his life in absolute adherence to the values he believed in. He sacrificed all his personal gains and comforts for preserving his integrity. He has been revered as the father of the country as his movement was pivotal in the gain of freedom for the country. The same political party he nurtured for public benevolence literally ignored him during independence for selfish reasons and has become the sole reason for unrest in Indian subcontinent!

Why great phenomena such as Peace, Non-Violence, Forgiveness, Compassion etc. cannot stay amongst the humans?! Why the same people who crave for The Peace start turning away from the same sooner than they attain the same??!! Why people naturally turn to violence in order to starve for peace as if starvation toward peace (NOT the peace) is what people always look forward to???!!! Either they are ignorant having no clue of what is preached to them or their innate intentions do not correlate with their apparent urge for peace or both. Reason is irrelevant! The fact reigns!! The people continue to push themselves toward the doom of miseries helplessly just like the moths that parade into the fire in spite of witnessing the fellow moths perishing pathetically in the very act ...

The situation is not that 'uptil now' there has been no friendliness among the Indians. Actually with every passing decade or century a value and cultural deterioration is taking place. We are getting worse with every passing day. Where are old cultural , social, ethical, spiritual values? Human of today is heading towards animalhood, While western countries are increasingly turning towards vegetarianism, but India is predominantly going opposite. India has traditionally been a friendly country , a special country in more than one respect. But youth of today is getting more and more 'modern' ! Be it eating, clothing, education, marriage...we are just not preserving old heritage, values.

India, of course, is mother place of 'Eternal religion' ..Sanatan Dharma.. A place from where Vedas, Upnishads and Gitas emerge. 'Sarva Bhoot Hite Rataa'..(get indulged in welfare of all creatures) ...is the message of India to the world from time immemorial. That is 'universal friendliness' ...you can't be 'sarva bhoot hite rataa' unless you develop universal friendliness. So important is this universal friendliness bhava in Sanatan Dharma, that Gita makes this bhava to be a MUST for every Yogi..whether you are Karma Yogi, or Jnana Yogi or Bhakti Yogi or Dhyaan Yogi ! Even 'equanimity' is not that important as is this 'universal friendliness' !! And note: These Yogas are in Scriptures from 'anaadi' kaal ( beginning of universe) !

Non-violence (Ahimsa) is practiced in India since eternity but with every passing day, we are getting violent. Need, thus, is not to cultivate any fresh values, but to preserve old values. In the name of 'changed times' we are getting worse and worse.

Where then is the question of their not existing in India ? Ha...!!

Why a wonderful value such as Ahimsa is rejected by the mass consistently?!

THE REASON why Ahimsa remains an alien notion to most, even to many self-claimed believers, is the genetic code that governs the birth as well as the born! Humans are nothing but animals with the same instincts of survival. Peace to them is actually unrest elsewhere! One finds oneself at peace only when one is guaranteed that one leads a superior life. That is the mighty inferiority complex one is born with. Otherwise, who will fight to survive?! Otherwise who will like to live in spite of all miseries??!! Otherwise who will seek birth in spite of the doom ahead???!!!

But Swamiji's appeal to remind oneself of the grace in getting human form! One is graced with faculties that can pause and observe the ways the genes rule the empire, experiment one's independence here and there, and appreciate the innate freedom one ever has irrespective of the gentic pool around! That is when Ahimsa makes sense and that is when it is effective. In fact, the notion of Ahimsa can become reality ONLY THEN! BUT ... can this desire be induced in any?!

It would be foolish to under-estimate th strength of genetic bondage we are all born with! It can easily reject the very suggestion in a revolt!! If one is clever, it can become cleverer to "accept" the suggestion and hold the same superficially never letting one to savor it!!! It requires relentless Abhyaasa and Vairaagya.

Now, how can Abhyaasa (voluntarily sought practice) and Vairaagya (voluntarily appreciated value in detachment) be ever enforced on any?! The very attempt is in self-violation!! How can any spiritual value ever flourish in the soil of bondage one craves to be buried in??!! Freedom is the basis for such activities … only a seeker's freedom can provide frame work for any such spiritual aspirations!!! Therefore, only one who takes courage to empower the freedom within can ever seek The Freedom as such. Ahimsa is THAT FREEDOM in its purest form.

Therefore, Ahimsa cannot take roots in mass irrespective of the great and noble attempts … be it Buddha or Jesus or Gandhi!

IMHO, whenever we have the feeling of spreading a value among masses we should strengthen that value more deeper in our own cores. Let all those who think of correcting the society first dive deep inside and clean ourselves. Thats an opportunity given by god to us in this lifetime to beautify his world.
We always would see reflection of our self in the masses.

--------------------------------
What is the practical way of establishing non-violence or peace in society?

Ahimsa is removing all traces of miseries within completely … obliterating the very urge to seek any misery as such. How can one who is not tormented within ever torment any other being?! One cannot adopt such nature by mimicking the apparent non-violent behavior superficially ... any such mimicry is bound to sink as soon as the one's innate urges and craves from within hit the surface! One has to adopt non-violence (Ahimsa) in one's innate center - the soul! Gandhiji is absolutely right!! But how can one teach that to those who is not willing to learn?! How can one teach that even those who show skin-deep enthusiasm but are incapable of absorbing the essence into their hearts??!!

Even KrishNa cannot do this feat!!! The sole seeker Arjuna seeks all knowledge from The Lord ... the rest of the mass remains in the oblivion on the verge of war. Bhagavan Vyaasa makes it a point to remind the seeker not to turn into preaching … Na buddhibhedam janayet agnyaanaam karmasanginaam! In the recent posting, Ramsukhdasji emphasises the same, a preacher is not a teacher but a cheater ... a true Guru seeks the seekers to share the peace!! Only a seeker can be worthy of being a student ... a true Guru will naturally seek him/her!!!

True non-violence is in accepting and respecting fellow beings as they are; NEVER in converting them into any ideologies! The very attempt of "converting" one into any faith or ideology (preaching in other words) is violation of one's freedom of existence … the very preaching of non-violence, therefore, is violence!! The only practical way of establishing peace amongst a society is to accept all the fellow beings as they are; respecting everyone as one is. Any attempt to negate or dismiss the fellow beings - even if it is in terms of the highest values ever possible - is bound to injure personal aspirations that eventually damage social harmony and integrity.

Therefore, telling others to be non-violent cannot establish peace - in fact it may aggravate violence further! Only living in non-violence will bring peace within which oozes out spreading its fragrance around!! One who savors the fragrance are lucky indeed. One who traces the core of non-violence through the very savoring are graced indeed. One who reaches the non-violence encore are wonders indeed. One who happens to just stay there are verily wonders of all wonders. One who is established in Ahimsa can never see anything other than THAT ever! One who never savors the fragrance of the peace truthfully can never perceive anything other than Himsa of survival ever!!

Therefore, be happy that you are happy - you being happy is the bottom line, the only achievable! One who wants to be happy will definitely seek it out on their own and for their own sake!! Afterall, when you are innately happy, how can there be any unhappiness anywhere anyway???!!! Also, the benevolent influence was possible with Buddha, Jesus and Gandhi because of what they were within more than what they did around.

Respects.
Naga Narayana.
